Diet is one of the things anyone can do to reduce their risk of developing dementia. Research shows, says the British Heart Foundation, that a healthy diet can reduce the risk of developing dementia. This is partly because “having heart disease or circulatory disease can increase the risk of developing dementia.” As a result, the healthier the body, the lower the risks.
The Foundation has a list of recommendations and advice about which foods to limit and how much to limit in order to reduce a person’s risk of dementia.
As for fried food and fast food, the charity says they should be eaten no more than once a week. Not only should fried foods be eaten less than once a week, but cheese should also be eaten. As for red meat, it is recommended to eat it less than four times a week.
And pastries and sweets should not be consumed more than five times a week. Butter is the fifth food to cut back as the Foundation recommends that a person consume less than a tablespoon per day to reduce the risk of dementia.
In addition, there is the so-called MIND diet which consists of two diets combined into one.
First, it is a diet based on whole grains, fish, and legumes, as well as fruits and vegetables.
The second is the DASH diet. Dietary approach to stop high blood pressure, this diet aims to control blood pressure. Unlike the Mediterranean diet, there is more emphasis on reducing salt intake.
The study found that those who followed the strictest diet had brains ‘7.5 years younger’ than those who followed the lower diet. A 2015 study also reported that diet may reduce a person’s risk of developing dementia.
