What causes people to feel discomfort in the ears, especially in adulthood, and what should be done to prevent this problem from turning into hearing loss.
Dr. Sergey Agapkin points out in a television interview that the reason for this feeling is the accumulation of cerumen in the ear (earwax). This feeling is exacerbated in the winter by heating and the dryness of the house air, which stimulates its accumulation. And that what indicates the presence of wax in the ear is congestion, decreased hearing, tinnitus and noise in the ears.
On her part, Dr. Natalia Kononova, an otolaryngologist, says, “The formation of wax in the ears is a natural process, protecting the ear from the penetration of dust and dirt. But it should not accumulate. However, there are factors that contribute to its accumulation, including pathological activity of the cerumen glands and aging. The structure of the ear, but the most common cause of wax buildup is the failure to clean the auditory canals properly.”
And she adds, “When a person cleans his ears a lot using cotton buds, wax condensation occurs in the ear, which leads to the formation of a wax plug. In addition to this, the process of cleaning the ears with cotton buds causes some microscopic wounds, which can develop into inflammation and pain.”
The specialist advises not to treat this case with home means, especially trying to remove the wax plug. Because this operation can be successfully performed by only a specialist doctor without serious consequences.
