According to the NHS, nearly 40 percent of people have high cholesterol even though many people may not realize they have it, and it is often referred to as the “silent killer”. with food choices.

Eating foods that are high in saturated fat or sugar can make you more likely to develop high cholesterol. To make matters worse, the condition often shows no immediate signs, causing serious illness if left untreated.

Inadequate consumption of some foods

Rosie Martin, a registered dietitian who specializes in preventative and healthy nutrition, and a member of the Advisory Board of Vegetarian Nutritionists, said that although high cholesterol may be associated with the foods you eat, it is also associated with the foods you don’t.

She added: “You are at greater risk of high cholesterol with high intakes of saturated fats from animal products such as any meat, cheese, cream, butter and processed foods such as cakes, biscuits and pastries. You are also at greater risk when you eat small amounts of plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.”

Whole grains, beans and some seeds are rich in dietary fiber, which binds cholesterol and its precursors to the digestive system and helps remove them from the body before they enter the bloodstream.

Eating two ounces of nuts a day “may lower cholesterol slightly, in the order of 5 percent.” Nuts contain additional nutrients that may also help protect the heart in other ways.
