You may talk to yourself; I know that heart diseases are one of the most important causes of death, but I remember once reading that traffic accidents were an important cause as well. Perhaps this is the topic of the article, or perhaps Corona, the media has been buzzing with it .. You will talk about the emerging Covid disease, right?

No, dear reader, because today’s cause (which is one of the most important causes of deaths) is a cause that is not talked about much, and perhaps the media and communication did not warn about it enough, and organizations did not issue strict instructions to avoid it.. So what is it? And what are we talking about?

Antimicrobial Resistance

Let’s learn together about this concept, and how the study in our hands concluded that it is an important cause of death around the world.

Antimicrobial resistance:

It is the ability of microorganisms (microbes) to grow and survive in a medium containing drugs designed to kill or inhibit them.

Antibiotics are used to treat infectious diseases caused by microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even parasites, and their resistance to these drugs makes treatment ineffective.

You might be wondering, is there a difference between antibiotic resistance and antimicrobial resistance?

Antimicrobials are used to treat infectious diseases caused by many microbes, such as bacteria, parasites (such as malaria), viruses (such as HIV) and fungi (such as candida). Microbial only (i.e. the pathogens acquire resistance).

How did the researchers conclude that it was a cause of death?

A study published on the 19th of this month revealed that deaths due to antimicrobial resistance worldwide exceeded 1.2 million people in 2019! Exceeding the deaths caused by HIV and malaria, and it is estimated that deaths will reach 10 million annually by 2050!

In November of 2021, the World Health Organization declared antimicrobial resistance to be one of the top 10 global public health threats in the world!

Lower respiratory tract infections and blood and abdominal infections combined accounted for approximately 79% of AMR-related deaths.

What did this study include and what did they find?

The study included data from nearly 204 countries and regions, and researchers found a difference in deaths from antimicrobial resistance between regions, for example, the lowest death rate was in Australia and New Zealand, while low- and middle-income countries had the highest death rate.

Despite this, antimicrobial resistance remains a high priority for high-income countries as well, as one of the study researchers said, “We have seen over the past two years with COVID-19 that this type of problem does not respect state borders, and high rates of resistance can spread anywhere one across a region or spread globally very quickly.”

What to do then?

The researchers identified some steps to limit the spread of this resistance, including:

• Prevention of infection or infection, especially infection of agents known to be resistant to antimicrobial AMR.

• The need for vaccines directed against pathogens, and to limit the use of antibiotics in unnecessary cases and in cases of viral diseases, and we reiterate: Do not use antibiotics to treat a viral disease, as we mentioned, antibiotics for bacterial diseases.

• The development of new antibiotics, and we published an article before, in which we talked about new ways to eliminate bacteria other than medicines, which may be the future in fighting bacteria instead of new medicines.

When your doctor prescribes a treatment, use it all. Do not interrupt your treatment when you feel better.
