A popular supplement that can harm brain health

Health experts have warned that a popular nutritional supplement can cause serious brain health problems.
Experts recommend reaping the benefits of certain minerals and vitamins from the food you eat, and not resorting to supplements unless you’re prone to a specific deficiency, express.
According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a non-profit research organization based in Washington, you should “avoid” iron supplements.
She stresses that this mineral can “harm” the health of the brain, and therefore should not be consumed unless directed by a doctor.
Iron is a vital component of the blood, which helps transport oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
Increased levels of iron in the brain are a well-known feature of aging and some brain diseases, which has raised concerns that changes in iron levels could increase a person’s risk of developing dementia.
“There is conflicting evidence about whether changes in blood iron levels increase a person’s risk of dementia, but researchers have discovered an association between excess iron in the brain and worsening symptoms,” says a report by Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Research shows that there is likely a link between excess minerals and the development of Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association (AS).

How much iron do I need?
According to the NHS, the amount of iron you need is:
8.7 mg per day for men over 18 years
14.8 mg per day for women 19 to 50 years old
8.7 mg per day for women over 50.
According to the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), most people should be able to get all the iron they need by eating a varied and balanced diet.
The department warns that if you are taking iron supplements, do not take too much as this could be harmful.
It adds that it is unlikely that iron supplements taken 17 mg or less per day will cause any harm.

What happens if you take too many iron supplements?
Side effects of high doses (more than 20 mg) of iron include constipation, feeling sick and stomach pain.
The NHS warns that “very high doses of iron can be fatal, especially if taken by children, so always keep iron supplements out of children’s reach.”

What foods rich in iron to fight anemia?
The list includes a large number of foods, including chicken, fish, red meat, milk, eggs, fruits such as guava, apples, dates, raisins, grapes, vegetables such as spinach, watercress, cabbage and mallow, and legumes such as lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas.
