Recently, the Court of Cassation upheld a ruling by the State Security Court to imprison a drug dealer for more than a year after being convicted of selling drugs to a secret policeman in Ajloun.

The court declared the defendant guilty of possessing and selling cannabis on the local market on January 21, 2021.

The State Security Court sentenced the accused to three years in prison for the crime of possessing illegal narcotics and ordered him to pay a fine of 2,000 dinars.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to two years in prison to give the accused a “second chance at life.”

Court documents said the DEA learned the defendant was in possession of illegal drugs and sent one of its men to pretend to be a buyer.

Court documents said that the security man bought drugs from the accused for 5 dinars and arrested him as a result.

The defendant appealed the ruling of the State Security Court through his lawyer, who said that the court “did not provide strong evidence to implicate his client.”

The lawyer also argued that the court failed to call several defense witnesses to “testify for my client,” according to court documents.

Meanwhile, the State Security Court’s Prosecution Office requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the accused.

The Court of Cassation confirmed that the State Security Court had followed the correct procedures in handing down judgments against the defendant.

“It became apparent to the court that the defendant voluntarily admitted to possession of narcotics with the intent to sell illegal goods in the local market,” the Supreme Court said.
