The journey of a 75-year-old French adventurer ended tragically when his body was found in a boat trying to cross the Atlantic.

The Portuguese Coast Guard succeeded in spotting Jean-Jacques Savin’s boat capsized off the Azores archipelago.

Safin had sailed from the southern side of the mainland of Portugal in early January, but his team had lost contact with him since Thursday night, which prompted its members to seek help from the competent authorities.

According to the British newspaper, The Guardian, Safin had previously crossed the Atlantic Ocean alone in a barrel in 2019, on an adventure that lasted 127 days.

According to the same source, Savin was hoping to reach the Caribbean again, this time using a rowboat 8 meters long and 1.7 meters wide.

Members of the Safin team revealed that they had received two distress signals from the adventurer prior to his departure, in which he told them that he was facing great difficulties, without giving further details.

And he informed Savin, before his news broke, that he had switched from using a powered water desalination device to a manual one, according to what his daughter said in a post on her Facebook page.

Savin set out on his trip in conjunction with his 75th birthday celebration, carrying 300 kilograms in his boat, including equipment, dried food, a spear gun for hunting, a heater and two water desalination devices.

Before setting sail, the adventurer said: “It is a special way to make fun of the old age you have reached by sailing the Atlantic. I will row eight hours a day, and I will continue my progress until the strong winds blow.”
