Foods that are high in fat, fast carbohydrates, semi-processed products, baked goods and soft drinks can cause pancreatitis, said Anna Safonova, MD, clinical diagnostician.
The doctor cited statistics indicating that over the past 10 years, the diagnosis of “pancreatitis” has tripled, and people aged 30-40 are at risk, while the incidence dynamics is higher among adolescents. Doctors believe that the main reason for the sharp increase in cases of pancreatitis is an unbalanced diet with an emphasis on carbohydrates and fatty foods, and a strong craving for fast food. These factors negatively affect the pancreas, which leads to increased pressure on the organ.
She noted in an interview with the newspaper “Izvestia”: “The symptoms of chronic pancreatitis are not specific. Heaviness in the abdomen, nausea, stool disorders, flatulence, pain in the upper parts and hypochondrium of the right cartilage – these symptoms can also occur in other diseases.”
Chronic pancreatitis is a long-term disease, accompanied by exacerbations, which eventually leads to irreversible morphological changes and a persistent decrease in pancreatic function. However, the correct lifestyle and timely treatment can stop the irreversible processes in the gland.
The doctor explained that determining the content of pancreatic enzymes in the blood is of fundamental importance in the diagnosis. With pancreatitis, the level of the enzyme amylase increases significantly. However, in chronic pancreatitis without exacerbation, the amylase level may remain normal. Savonova added that in this case, the analysis that determines the level of lipase in the blood will be more informative.
In addition, stool analysis is included in the comprehensive examination. Tests such as serum elastase and plasma glucose will complete the disease picture.
“Since pancreatitis by symptoms can be confused with other diseases of the abdominal organs, self-treatment is not recommended. Pancreatitis is one of the most difficult diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. A timely correct diagnosis is half the success of treatment,” Safonova concluded.
