Today, Tuesday, the Parliamentary Legal Committee continued to listen to the opinions, observations and proposals of law professors in a number of Jordanian universities regarding the draft constitutional amendments for the year 2021.
This came in a meeting held by the committee, today, Tuesday, under the chairmanship of Attorney Abdel Moneim Al-Awdat, and in the presence of the Minister of State for Legal Affairs, lawyer Wafaa Bani Mustafa.
Al-Awdat said that the committee has pursued its work mechanism since the beginning of its discussion of the constitutional amendments, holding a series of meetings with specialists and stakeholders to listen to opinions and proposals that would help the parliamentary committee reach correct decisions.
He stressed that the House of Representatives and the Legal Committee have not decided on the constitutional amendments, and that there is no prior position on them, adding, “We want to benefit from the expertise of specialists and relevant authorities, as these opinions and observations will be respected by the Committee and the focus of its attention when making the decision.”
Al-Awdat indicated that the draft constitutional amendments did not come in isolation from the basic idea, which is to reconsider the legislation regulating political life and the amendments that occurred to the electoral and party laws, which necessitate making these constitutional amendments to be in line with the two laws.
The attendance of law professors at universities, in turn, presented a set of observations and opinions on the constitutional amendments related to adding the word “Jordanian women” to Article VI of the constitution, lowering the age of candidacy for parliamentary elections, empowering women, assigning appeals to the election results to the Court of Cassation, and reducing the term of the presidency. Parliament, in addition to observations related to other articles.
