The Jordanian Masarat Foundation for Development and Development organized, on Wednesday in Jerash Club, a seminar entitled “Empowering Women in Political Parties Using Government Financial Support” within the partnership project funded by the Canadian Fund to Support Local Initiatives “Supporting Gender Engagement in Political Life in Jordan.”
During the symposium he moderated, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of “Masarat”, MP Omar Al-Ayasra, stressed the need to build party women’s capacities to improve their participation in the leadership of political parties.
The dialogue discussion was divided into two axes. The first axis was devoted to evaluating the role of political parties in nominating women, and the second axis was devoted to evaluating the role of parties in raising demands for promoting women’s rights during electoral campaigns (slogans, electoral programs, and others).
The aim of the discussion was to draw conclusions and lessons from the experience of involving women in party lists in the elections, to be a promising start in the work of parties to enhance women’s political participation.
Al-Ayasra pointed out that the quota encouraged women to compete, “Jordanian society is a patriarchal society,” and thus the quota removed the barrier of fear for women, because people usually prefer males over women, and if there was no quota, no woman would succeed
The former provincial council member and head of the Women and Youth Committee, Dr. Hind Al-Shrooqi, said that empowering women is essential and that Jordan is one of the advanced countries in supporting and empowering women and their assumption of high positions in the state, and that the reform process is not complete without enabling the second half of it, especially in political work. partisan
Al-Shrooqi added that it is necessary to spread the partisan culture in society and work with it. That is why everyone must intensify and work together for the process of progress and comprehensive reform in Jordan
The head of Jerash Sports Club, Dr. Noman Al-Atoum, stressed the importance of the important role of women in the House of Representatives, and that in the supervisory role, women are distinguished in the parliament, and their presence helped in the performance, supervision, legislation and laws that relate specifically to the family, children and women.
In the same context, a discussion took place among the audience, which focused on the fact that the presence of women and their access to the parliament dome plays a role in encouraging women’s political life and its reflection on society, as women have belonging to their regions, which makes them able to change and help those around them, with a focus on legislation and oversight.
They indicated that our Jordanian society has developed a lot, but there is still a masculine view, adding that women have an active role and they are in all positions.
And they continued, that the quota was necessary in the past, because without the quota, people would have hesitated to vote for women. We want to reach a stage in which women win as a suitable person and not just because they are a woman, although there are examples of women who won without a quota and may win without a quota seat if they compete With a seat outside the quota
They indicated that the quota was necessary to change the prevailing stereotype about women and their abilities, and that thanks to the quota we saw a greater number of women in Parliament, but the parties took advantage of the quota to have a greater number of seats in the parliament.
They stressed that this does not mean that the position of these parties and some trends and currents has changed most of women’s rights, but that they benefited from the quota to increase seats and at the same time, this situation changed the stereotype imposed by society on the role of women.
They saw that civil society in general and traditional political parties played a greater role in developing the image of women in the public sphere. “The process is difficult and intertwined because change does not require the presence of women in parliament only, but respect for their role in the public sphere, and I reject the role of women being formal and subservient. What does the man say to her?
They noted that the blocs were looking at women as just a filling for the list and not a success project, which calls for us to go to amend the electoral law so that looking at women does not remain just a filling in light of thought and culture that looks at women with caution, although women did not get their chance in the past. And the men were the ones leading the stage.
