The face mask has become an essential thing in our daily lives since the spread of the new Corona virus around the world, to protect against infection with the virus, and since the world was forced to wear it when leaving the house, and being in places of various gatherings, many scientific studies have appeared on its impact on our lives, and one of them is a study that claimed That the members of the Supreme Court jury are more able to tell if the person standing on the podium is lying or telling the truth while wearing a face mask, where the study authors at the University of Portsmouth studied how Corna affected the abilities of jurors to detect the lies of the wearer of face masks in virtual courtrooms, According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail” website.
The researchers, psychologists Aldert Frigg of the University of Portsmouth and Maria Hartwig of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, found that facial expressions and other nonverbal behaviors that hide behind a face mask or behind a video screen in virtual courts cannot fool judges, as concealing Facial expressions by wearing a mask can make it easier for jurors to assess the credibility of the accused, by listening carefully and evaluating the conversation.
Professor Frigg said: “It does not appear that measures to counter the spread of the emerging corona virus negatively affect juries, provided that jurors are able to hear the defendant clearly.”
And the British newspaper pointed out that a single study on the effect of a face mask on detecting lies is not enough, as more research must be conducted to address questions and concerns about how the pandemic affects the justice system.“
What are the methods of detecting lies?
1- The person’s delay in responding to the question and verbal procrastination, such as responding with another question, instead of responding directly.
2- The lying person is afraid of being exposed, so he looks to the left instead of looking into the eyes of the person in front of him, so that he can think of a convincing lie to answer his answer.
3- Attempting to hide the truth, makes the person feel tense, sweat as his heart rate accelerates, and his mouth dries up.
4- The liar tries to convince the person in front of him of his lie by excessively using the upper body language where he looks into the eyes of the other person without blinking.
