University of Hong Kong scientists have published the first image of an omicron, taken using an electron microscope.

And the Russian RIA Novosti news agency indicates that the scientists of the University’s Faculty of Medicine, in cooperation with experts in the field of diseases and viruses, were able to take a microscopic image of a monkey kidney cell (Vero E6) after it was infected with the “Omicron” mutant of the emerging coronavirus, and published it after it was enlarged.

The researchers explained that in the case of a simple magnification, cell damage with vesicles containing small black viral particles is observed on the image. At high magnification, virus particles appear in the form of coronal spines on their surface.

It became known earlier that scientists from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong were able to isolate the “Omicron” mutant from clinical samples, which will allow the development and production of a vaccine against this mutant.
