The Jordanian Federation of Pharmaceutical Producers said that one of the most prominent achievements of the Jordanian pharmaceutical industry during the years 2020 and 2021 was the expansion of the development of many new and generic medicines with different concentrations and pharmaceutical forms, as 231 Jordanian medicines were registered.
The union added that the companies expanded by exporting to non-traditional markets, such as: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and some countries in Africa. The volume of Jordan’s exports of medicine over the two years (2020-2021) amounted to one billion Jordanian dinars, and it is the only sector that exports more than it imports; Its trade balance is in favor of Jordan.
This came during a presentation by the union about the reality of the Jordanian pharmaceutical industry, during a visit to the Director General of the Food and Drug Corporation, Dr. Nizar Mhaidat, to the Jordanian Federation of Pharmaceutical Producers, today, Wednesday.
The visit comes in the context of the efforts made by the Foundation, within the framework of achieving pharmaceutical security, especially during the period of the Corona pandemic, and supporting the national pharmaceutical industry and promoting its exports, in addition to standing on the sector’s needs and possible aspects of support for it.
During the meeting, which was attended by the president of the federation, Dr. Maher al-Kurdi, members of the federation’s board of directors, and the secretary general of the federation, Dr. Hanan al-Seboul, Mhaidet said that the institution is concerned with the excellence of the Jordanian pharmaceutical industries, raising their competitiveness at the local, regional and global levels, and helping them open new markets for them.
Mahadat affirmed the Establishment’s absolute support for the National Pharmaceutical Industries by facilitating the transaction procedures for pharmaceutical companies, to accelerate the pace of their work in manufacturing and increase their competitiveness and access to foreign markets, adding that the Corporation will take policies and procedures to support the national pharmaceutical industry in foreign markets by accelerating the registration of medicines.
Mahadat stressed the institution’s keenness to overcome the obstacles and challenges facing the national pharmaceutical industry, which had a clear national position in support of the national effort to address the Corona pandemic.
In turn, Dr. Al-Kurdi praised the approach followed by the Food and Drug Corporation, in support, cooperation and continuous field communication with national pharmaceutical companies to identify their needs and interact with them to achieve royal visions in making Jordan a regional center and starting point for medicines, nutritional supplements, medical supplies and sterilizers.
Al-Kurdi confirmed the foundation’s orientations to support the national pharmaceutical industry; In terms of its formation of many specialized committees in all sectors and its branches, to provide companies with support, advice and advice, and to give them priority in registration and inspection of their sites; In support of the pharmaceutical industry and the Jordanian economy, and providing job opportunities for Jordanians in this field.
In addition, Dr. Al-Seboul presented an overview of the reality of the Jordanian pharmaceutical industry and the challenges it faces, saying: The volume of investment in the Jordanian pharmaceutical industry amounts to one billion dollars in the Jordanian local market in 23 companies inside the Kingdom, and 750 million dollars in branches owned by Jordanian pharmaceutical companies outside the Kingdom. , numbering 17 branches, distributed in 8 countries, and the pharmaceutical industry employs about 11 thousand employees directly and 30 thousand employees indirectly, and 99 percent of them are Jordanians, where the percentage of females is 37 percent, and 67 percent of them hold university degrees.
Al-Suboul indicated that the pharmaceutical sector exports reach 65 countries, as the volume of exports last year amounted to 458.8 million Jordanian dinars, according to the statistics of the Food and Drug Administration, and it is the second largest exporting sector, and the first industrial sector to be exported. percent of national exports.
Al-Seboul explained that the Jordanian medicine is an essential element for achieving national drug security and its significant contribution to the health system in Jordan. Jordanian pharmaceutical companies are a major provider of medicines in government bids, as their share in government bids is about 52 percent of the number of referred units, while their cost does not exceed 23 percent of the bidding budget in most therapeutic groups, and Jordanian medicines cover most of the therapeutic groups and seek to invest in expanding groups. That was the monopoly of international companies, such as cancer drugs and biotechnology drugs.
She added that the competition of Jordanian pharmaceutical companies in government bids contributed to reducing the prices offered by foreign companies and had a major role in reducing the treatment bill.
With regard to the challenges, Al-Sebol pointed out that the local pharmaceutical market is small and open, and the competition in it is great, pointing to the unprecedented rise in manufacturing costs such as the prices of raw materials and shipping costs.
