On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly passed two resolutions related to the Palestinian issue, and another to the occupied Syrian Golan.
One of the decisions stressed that any measures taken to change the character of occupied Jerusalem are “null and void and must be stopped,” and that any permanent solution to the city of Jerusalem must take into account the rights of both parties and the freedom of worship of the three monotheistic religions.
The members voted by majority on the resolution, which bore the name “peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine”, as 148 countries voted in favor of it, 9 countries opposed it, and 14 countries abstained. The resolution affirms the achievement of a just and comprehensive settlement of the question of Palestine to bring about comprehensive peace and stability in the Middle East.
As for the resolution entitled “Jerusalem,” 129 members voted in favor, 11 opposed, and 31 abstained. This resolution, whose draft was submitted by Egypt, also urges stopping incitement, especially in religiously sensitive sites, with the need to preserve the historical and legal status quo in the city, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
The resolution called for “the convening of an international conference at the appropriate time in order to advance and expedite the achievement of a peaceful, just, lasting and comprehensive settlement” between the occupation and Palestine.
The resolution called on “Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and to reach a just solution to the Palestinian refugee problem.”
The third resolution on the Syrian Golan Heights, occupied since 1967, received the approval of 94 countries, 8 against, including the United States and Israel, with 69 abstentions.
The resolution affirmed that “Israel’s decision to impose its laws and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan is null and void and has no legitimacy whatsoever.”
The Israeli occupation announced the annexation of the Golan in 1981, a move that was not recognized internationally.
The General Assembly resolution issued today stressed that “the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block to achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.”
