The Appeals Committee of the Tripoli Court of Appeals rejected the two appeals against the candidacy of the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, for the presidential elections scheduled for December 24.
The court ruled in form to accept the appeal submitted by Abdel Hamid Dabaiba to the two challenges to his candidacy for the presidential elections.
And earlier on Tuesday, Libyan media said that the Tripoli Appeal Court accepted Dabaiba’s appeal and canceled the first appeal against him, and postponed the pronouncement of the other two appeals to today’s session, Wednesday.
Last Sunday, the Tripoli Appeal Court accepted an appeal by several political figures against the candidacy of the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Dabaiba.
A source close to Fathi Bashagha, the former Minister of the Interior and one of the presidential candidates, said – in a statement to Agence France-Presse on Tuesday – that the appeal accepted by the court “is based on the fact that Dabaiba did not provide evidence that he had stopped working 3 months before the date of the elections, in addition to his possession of a nationality.” A foreigner next to the Libyan, which violates the conditions for candidacy according to the electoral law,” according to the source.
Libyan sources also reported that the Appeals Committee of the Court of First Instance in the city of Al-Zawiya (about 50 kilometers west of the capital, Tripoli) accepted yesterday an appeal that would result in the cancellation of the Electoral Commission’s decision to accept the candidacy of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar for the presidential elections.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was excluded from the preliminary list of candidates for the presidential elections, but the decisions to exclude candidates issued so far are preliminary and subject to appeal.
Meanwhile, the UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, confirmed what he described as the renewed support of the international community through the United Nations, the steps taken by the Electoral Commission in Libya towards the voting stage.
Kubis said that the United Nations is committed to standing by the Libyans, to achieve their aspirations towards the desired democratic state.
For his part, the head of the Electoral Commission, Imad al-Sayeh, said that the meeting with Kubis discussed what he described as the acceleration of its implementation stages and the international community’s interest in the progress achieved in this regard.
And last Wednesday, the High National Elections Commission in Libya announced a preliminary list of 73 candidates for the presidential elections, including retired Major General Khalifa Haftar, in addition to another list that includes 25 excluded people, including Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.
