Compass – The Governor-General of the Caribbean island of Barbados, Sandra Mason, has announced her separation from the British Crown after 55 years of independence.

Sandra was sworn in as President of the Republic in an official ceremony attended by the Crown Prince of the United Kingdom, Prince Charles.

Barbados was liberated from the authority of the British crown with a ceremony on Tuesday morning, during which Queen Elizabeth II was removed from her post as president, which is the newest republic in the world.
The governor-general of the Caribbean island, Sandra Mason, was sworn in as president of the fledgling republic, and the queen’s flag, which represented Barbados’ submission to the British crown, was lowered.

Barbados held its first presidential elections last October, 13 months after declaring its constitutional separation from the British Crown, and a few days ago.
With the Caribbean island’s most prosperous and populous island ready, the island government said it was time to “leave our entire colonial past behind”.

The restoration of the republican system to this small Caribbean country, independent since 1966, came after years of local campaigning and long debates about centuries of British influence punctuated by two hundred years of slavery.
The island of Barbados, and its capital, Bridgetown, is one of the most prominent Caribbean islands, which is witnessing stability at all levels, giving it a relatively high standard of living.

The nascent republic, known for its magnificent beaches and considered the pearl of the Lesser Antilles with a population of about 287,000, will henceforth confront on its own the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, and the inequalities inherited from the colonial past.
