When you notice that your mother loves your grandchildren more than you do, it is not just a passing observation or an emotion, but there is a biological explanation behind it.
The researchers found that when the grandmothers were shown pictures of the biological grandchildren, they showed a neural response in areas of the brain that are important for empathy and motivation.
The study was published in the journal “Proceedings of the Royal Society B”, based in Britain, and researchers at Emory University in the US state of Georgia monitored 50 grandmothers who reported that they had positive relationships with their grandchildren, and participated in many activities.
The women underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan, which measures changes in brain blood flow. During the grandmothers’ examination, they were shown pictures of their grandchildren (ages 3-12), children, and pictures of children they did not know and an adult they did not know.
Grandmothers wrote private data to measure their involvement in raising their grandchildren.
The researchers noted that viewing pictures of grandchildren activated the empathic and motor areas in the brain, and those who wanted more involvement in caring for grandchildren generated a large amount of brain activity.
“The study points to the fact that the changes in the brains of those who take care of children are important, and it is not about parents and grandparents,” said Jodi Paulosky, a French neuroscientist who was not involved in the study.
She considered the results of the study exciting.
The study had previously focused on the brain functions of mothers and fathers, but this study is among the first to examine how grandmothers’ brains interact with their grandchildren.
