The Regional Directorate of Water, Forests and Combating Desertification of the High Atlas in Marrakesh, Morocco, announced Thursday the dismantling of an international network active in the possession, hunting and illegal trade in falcons.
The directorate said in a statement that it had seized eight falcons, in addition to a significant amount of prey belonging to protected species, which were hunted using falcons.
She explained that, following accurate information obtained by the water and forestry elements in Marrakesh, a gang active in possession, hunting and illegal trade in falcons was dismantled.
The source added that on November 16, 2021, a car suspected of transporting falcons was stopped. After inspection and listening to its owner, along with the Royal Gendarmerie of the Oasis of Sidi Ibrahim, it became clear that it was related to a smuggling operation of falcons owned by people from a Gulf country.
According to the report, on November 17, 2021, at Marrakech-Menara International Airport, eight narcotic falcons were seized, which are tightly stored so as not to attract attention, in the possession of the suspects while they were trying to go via a private plane outside Morocco.
