Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that the recent Ethiopian talk about the Renaissance Dam “is all prevarication and lack of credibility and does not herald the existence of a political will to reach an agreement.”
During a telephone interview with the “On My Responsibility” program broadcast on the “Echo of the Country” channel, yesterday, Sunday, Shoukry explained that his meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations witnessed an understanding regarding Egypt’s position regarding the Ethiopian dam, and that the Security Council stressed the importance of reaching a binding solution to the crisis.
Recently, Ibrahim Idris, a member of the Ethiopian negotiating team on the Renaissance Dam file, said that his country will sign an agreement with Egypt and Sudan only when national interests and future development are secured in benefiting from its water resources.
The Ethiopian official affirmed Addis Ababa’s readiness and permanent readiness to benefit equitably from the waters of the Nile, even though it contributes 86% of the river’s water resources.
However, the Egyptian Foreign Minister commented on these statements, saying, “They are permanent Ethiopian fallacies.” He explained that the negotiations are only related to the filling and operation of the Renaissance Dam.
Shoukry had said on Saturday that his country had achieved a great achievement in the issue of the Renaissance Dam by presenting it for the second time to the Security Council, and issuing a presidential statement regarding it.
He said in statements to the “Nile” news channel, “We have a great achievement that was achieved by bringing the issue to the Security Council for the second time. This time, a presidential statement came out that strengthened the negotiating framework under the auspices and presidency of the African Union, and also strengthened the negotiating track supported by the observers, and specified that this be done within a reasonable period.
Shoukry stressed that Egypt is always looking forward to reaching a binding legal agreement that achieves the interests of the three countries and ends this crisis, noting that what is issued by the Security Council has a mandatory character that requires that these countries, under the leadership of the African Union, engage in negotiations, show good faith, and reach an agreement that ends this crisis. the crisis.
Egypt and Sudan have exchanged accusations with Ethiopia of being responsible for the failure of the dam negotiations sponsored by the African Union for months, within a negotiating track that began about 10 years ago, due to differences over construction, operation and filling.
Saudi position
For his part, Saudi Ambassador to Cairo Osama bin Ahmed Naqli said that his country clearly supports Egypt and Sudan in the dam crisis, adding that these two countries are keen for Ethiopia to benefit.
Nuqli stressed – during a telephone interview with the “On My Responsibility” program – that the Kingdom stresses the need to reach a fair and legal agreement that guarantees the water rights of the three countries, and equal shares that guarantee their rights all.
