The Saudi Ministry of Interior threatens after the videos of harassment on the National Day

Video clips and photos spread on social media, documenting a number of cases of harassment, following the National Day celebrations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which prompted the Ministry of Interior there to publish a statement in which it vowed to punish the harassers.
In one of the videos, a young man appeared to harass a girl who had come out of the window of a car in which the Saudi flag was hoisted, while he was approaching her and filming her trying to keep him away from her.
In addition to individual incidents, the circulating clips documented incidents of mass harassment in some cases.
In one of the circulating videos, a large group of young men appeared who gathered heavily around a woman and harassed her while she was trying to get away from them.
In another video, one of the young men touched the body of a woman, until a man appeared to remove the harassers from her.
Another clip showed that young men tried to molest a veiled woman who was sitting in her car.
This video showed another mass harassment of a girl wearing a black abaya, with only her face and hair visible, on a street that looked as if it was densely filled with harassers.
For its part, the Saudi Ministry of Interior tweeted, on Friday, explaining the system followed to combat the “crime of harassment” in the country.
The ministry stated that the harasser is subject to a penalty of imprisonment not exceeding two years, and a fine of not more than 100,000 riyals, or one of them.
The ministry indicated that the penalty will be increased to five years in prison, and a fine of 300,000 riyals, if harassment is repeated or practiced against certain groups, including children and people with disabilities.
