India recorded one of the most horrific crimes, when 33 men took turns raping a 15-year-old girl, sparking outrage in the country.

An Indian police official said, “The crime took place in various places in Thane district, Maharashtra state, in western India, over a period of 8 months.”

He added that the police arrested 24 people in connection with the crime, including two minors, according to the newspaper “Times of India”.

According to local reports, the girl’s condition is stable, and she is currently undergoing treatment in a government hospital.

The crime angered residents in the state, as crowds gathered outside a police station where the men accused in the case are being held, and police deployed more forces for fear of storming the headquarters.

Indian authorities in Maharashtra registered a case against 33 men for rape, repeated rape, gang rape and rape of a minor.

She stated that the crimes occurred between January 29 and September 22 this year.

The story began in January, when the girl was raped by her boyfriend, who documented the incident in a video, and then began to blackmail her by publishing the video.

Later, his friends and acquaintances took turns raping the girl on several occasions and in different places.

India amended its rape laws after a gang rape in the capital, New Delhi, in 2012, but the number of crimes is still high, with more than 28,000 rapes reported in 2020, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.

The actual number is likely to be much higher, as many cases go unreported due to social stigma and distrust of authorities’ figures.
