French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said on Wednesday that the president expects “concrete measures” from the United States to restore confidence between the two countries, when he makes a phone call with US President Joe Biden.
Last week, Paris recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Australia after Washington and London signed a nuclear-powered submarine deal with Canberra, prompting Australia to cancel a previous $40 billion purchase of French-designed submarines.
Macron’s office added that the president expected Biden, during the call, to acknowledge that consultations with allies should have taken place before making a decision on the submarines, and that the United States should acknowledge the need for European sovereignty.
France’s recall of its ambassador from Washington was the first time that Paris took this action.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said last Friday that Macron’s rare decision was made because of the exceptional importance of the matter.
On Tuesday, Germany joined France in criticizing the United States for secretly negotiating the security pact with Australia and Britain, while the EU’s top official said such behavior was unacceptable.
