A recent study revealed exciting information regarding the “vampire catfish”.

The fish is known as a “vampire” or “candero”, as it is a parasite, and sucks the blood of fish, and smaller species of it can invade the urethra of humans.

The Amazon River is the original home of this fish, which can grow up to 40 centimeters in length, and some are much smaller.

The candiru usually eats parts of the host fish after it has penetrated its body.

A study published in the journal Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria sheds light on the mechanism by which the fish navigate the Amazon River.

Chiara Lubic, an ichthyologist at the Federal University of Amazonas, Venezuela, concluded that this fish navigates by moving to the body of another fish, which plays the role of host for the “candero”.

And the ichthyologist found that the “Kanderu” was attached to the thorny catfish while crossing the Amazon River, not for food, but for transportation.

Larry Page, a fish scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History, was quoted by the British newspaper “Daily Mail” as saying: “Kanderu uses the largest fish as a taxi to travel long distances.”

It is worth noting that the first documented case of removing the “candero” from the human urethra occurred in 1997.
