US President Joe Biden affirmed Washington’s readiness to fully return to the nuclear agreement if Tehran abides by its commitments, declaring its adherence to the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli), while United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the renewal of the United Nations, saying that the world is witnessing an explosion in seizing power through coups.
This came in their speeches at the opening of the 76th session of the General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in the personal presence of about 110 leaders and heads of government of Member States.
The influx of leaders of countries and governments participating in the work of this session, which is characterized by a combination of personal presence and virtual participation, due to the Corona pandemic.
In a speech during the United Nations General Assembly, Biden stressed that the current decade is a fateful decade for the world, and considered that military force should be the last option in resolving international conflicts.
On the other hand, Biden indicated that the United States had ended a 20-year war in Afghanistan and had begun a new page of diplomacy. He explained that he will work with US partners to confront “terrorism” around the world so that they do not have to deploy forces on a large scale, and will address “terrorist” threats by working with what he described as local partners.
With regard to Iran, Biden reiterated the United States’ commitment to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and stressed that the United States is ready to return fully to the nuclear agreement with it if it decides to return to its commitments to the agreement.
Divisions and challenges
For his part, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said – today, Tuesday – that the world is witnessing an explosion in the seizures of power by force with the return of military coups.
Guterres added that geopolitical divisions undermine international cooperation, limit the ability of the UN Security Council to take the necessary decisions, and perpetuate a sense of impunity.
During his speech at the 76th session, the Secretary-General addressed challenges that he said face the international community, and stressed what he described as the need to renew the social contract and ensure a valid United Nations for a new era.
Guterres called for advancing peace in Afghanistan, defending human rights, providing aid and supporting women there.
Guterres also said that the first gap that deserves to be addressed in the world is the peace gap, and called – during his speech before the General Assembly – to give impetus to peace in countries such as Afghanistan and Ethiopia, and to create opportunities for humanitarian support to reach and opportunities for political dialogue.
On the other hand, he urged the leaders of Israel and Palestine to resume a meaningful dialogue and to recognize the two-state solution as the only path to a just peace. He also called on all parties in Ethiopia to cease hostilities, create conditions for the start of a political dialogue and ensure humanitarian access.
