The Sudanese News Agency announced that all those accused of participating in the coup attempt have been arrested and an investigation has begun.

Anadolu Agency, quoting a Sudanese military source, reported that “40 officers were arrested for their involvement in the failed coup attempt.”

Sudanese television also quoted the media advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, confirming that an attempt to seize power had been thwarted.

A government source told Al Jazeera that the military entered the station’s headquarters at dawn today to broadcast the coup statement, but the attempt was immediately aborted.

A government source confirmed that information about the coup attempt was made available to the government last night, which helped thwart it quickly.

This morning, the Sudanese official television had confirmed that the country was witnessing a “failed coup attempt”, and called on citizens to confront it.

Sudanese television began broadcasting patriotic songs, and government sources told Al Jazeera that the authorities would issue a statement in this regard later.

For his part, a member of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman, said that “the Sudanese should rise to defend their country and protect the transition.”

He added that “things are under control, and the revolution is victorious.”

A leader in the Forces for Freedom and Change told Al Jazeera that members of the former regime had carried out the coup attempt, and a number of them had been arrested.

In turn, a government source revealed that the coup attempt was carried out by officers from armored vehicles and the two military regions of Wadi Sidna and Omdurman, and that elements of the participants in the coup attempt were being confronted in the Armored Corps region.

Activists on social media circulated pictures showing the deployment of military forces and vehicles in the streets of Khartoum on Tuesday morning.
