Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing to inaugurate the “Turkish House”, on Monday, opposite the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
Turkey had purchased the building in 1977, with the contribution of its foreign minister at the time, Ihsan Sabri Caglienkl, who served as Turkey’s permanent representative to the United Nations until 2013.
The total area of the multi-purpose “Turkish House” building is about 20,000 square meters, and on its 35 floors, it stands opposite the United Nations building at a height of 171 meters, and next to it is the United Nations Square and the Permanent Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations.
The building currently houses the Turkish Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General in New York, in addition to meeting and exhibition rooms, housing and a car garage for staff.
The architectural firm “Perkins Eastman” took over the task of designing the “Turkish House” building, as it sent its chief architect, Jonathan Stark, to Turkey to research and excavate Turkish Seljuk and Ottoman architecture.
The “Turkish House” building bears the motifs of traditional Turkish architecture, especially the Seljuk, and rises in the form of a tulip.
Today, the building has become one of the symbols of the American city of New York.
