In a press release, Fierz announced today, Monday, that its vaccine against the Corona virus is safe and generates a “strong” immune response for children aged 5 to 11 years, according to the results of clinical trials.
The companies tested a two-dose regimen of 10 micrograms — about a third of the dose used in adolescents and adults — administered for three weeks, and said the doses were well tolerated and produced an immune response and side effects similar to those seen in a study of people ages 16 to 25.
Common side effects for teens and adults include fatigue, headache, muscle aches and chills, fever and nausea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The companies said the data, which includes more than 2,200 children, will be submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration and other health regulators “as soon as possible”.
“We are keen to expand the protection offered by the vaccine to this younger population, according to a regulatory statement, particularly as we track the spread of the delta variant and the significant threat it poses to children,” Pfizer CEO Albert Burla said in a statement.
So far, Pfizer’s vaccine has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for people under the age of 12, while Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are licensed for adults.
The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to make a decision sometime this week on which groups are eligible to receive a third dose, or booster, of the Pfizer vaccine.
An advisory panel from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday unanimously recommended Pfizer’s booster injections for people 65 and older and other frail Americans.
