An official in the Ministry of Social Development said that beggary seriously affects “social security in the kingdom and people’s perception of Jordan.”
The director of the Anti-Begging Department at the Ministry of Social Development, Maher Klopp, confirmed that “there is a significant increase in the number of organized beggary,” noting that “since the beginning of the year, more than 10,000 beggars have been arrested throughout the kingdom.”
The official added that begging has become the “profession of choice” for many groups that are mainly led by parents who disperse their children in different areas and monitor them to ensure they are not caught.
“Unfortunately, the majority of beggars have mastered the art of begging, despite their financial stability,” Klopp added.
The anti-begging teams recently arrested a beggar who receives a monthly salary of 393 dinars, and owns a private car and an individual facility, according to a statement by the Ministry of Social Development, on Sunday.
The statement indicated that one of the arrested beggars receives a monthly income of approximately 1,100 dinars and owns a private car.
According to the ministry’s statement, “one of the arrested beggars owns a sole proprietorship with a capital of 16,000 dinars.”
Klopp urged citizens to report beggars through the department’s hotline.
