A member of the Royal Committee for the Modernization of the Political System, Jamil Al-Nimri, said on Sunday that with the upcoming elections, the citizen will vote for a political party and not for people where the name and symbol of the party will be on the ballot paper, and this is happening for the first time in Jordan.
In his speech to the “Voice of the Kingdom” program, he added that during his work in the committee he made proposals that were partly taken, adding that the final director is good.
Al-Nimri added: “From the first moment, I was presenting proposals, which some described as very advanced in relation to the situation we are in, meaning they were taking part of the proposal, and I was fighting for them to take the entire proposal.”
Commenting on an opinion poll on the committee’s work, Al-Nimri said, “I do not blame the 68% who do not trust the committee, I want people to trust the outcomes.”
Al-Nimri also said that if we want to go to elected parliamentary governments, they must be formed by political parties.
Speaking about the threshold (the discount rate), Al-Nimri said that it was set up to prevent the fragmentation of seats on many lists, as small lists or small parties are required to ally with large parties to exceed the discount rate or threshold, and in this case, your quota can be at least two or three seats.
Member of the Royal Committee for the Modernization of the Political System, Wael Al-Sakka, said that over the decades, citizens have generated a state of distrust of any official institution.
Al-Saqa pointed out that the committee as a whole adopted the gradual method, whether in the local government or in the election law, noting that this is logical in the method of change, as sudden change and major shock are not practical at all.
Al-Sakka explained that the threshold is the most important in party life, and it is one of the achievements of the election law outputs, 2.5 for the national list and 7 for the local list.
Al-Sakka added that a partisan person in Jordan is not a requirement to be affiliated with a party, meaning that the partisan mentality exists among many people and they are not members of parties.
