The magazine “Apotecen Omschau” said that some people develop allergy symptoms when taking certain medications, in what is known as “drug allergy”.
The magazine explained that the allergic response is an excessive reaction of the immune system to some drugs, noting that about 25% of allergic cases appear in those who have a certain predisposition. Under certain conditions, this allergy can be serious and life-threatening.
All drugs can trigger allergic reactions, but there are drugs that often do so, such as antibiotics, pain relievers, and some anti-cancer drugs.
One of the active substances, which can lead to this is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac, or acetylsalicylic acid.
Symptoms appear on the skin often, or on the entire body, such as redness, high temperature, and itching of the skin.
Severe attacks can lead to shortness of breath and circulatory problems up to severe anaphylactic shock, which is associated with respiratory arrest, heart failure, and blood vessels.
Symptoms are usually very severe and can develop quickly and be life-threatening.
The diagnosis can be made with skin examinations and blood tests. Treatment depends on the symptoms and their form, but in most cases drug interactions are harmless and resolve without consequences with supportive treatment with glucocorticoids.
