Today, Sunday, astronomer Imad Mujahid from the Wadi Rum / Umm al-Dami Observatory, said that astronomical calculations indicate that the autumnal equinox for this year will be next Wednesday, September 22.
He added that on this day the sun will be completely perpendicular to the equator at exactly 10.22 pm, local summer time, and on the same day the summer season, which lasted for 93 days and three quarters of the day, ends, and the autumn season begins astronomically, as night and day are equal on the globe.
The sun will rise on the autumnal equinox in Oman at 6.26 from the eastern corner exactly and its amount is 89 degrees 17 minutes and the east can be determined through a specific area on the horizon such as houses or trees, then the sun sets on the same day at 6.36 at the angle 270 degrees and 34 minutes The west angle can also be determined, so that the night lasts for 11 hours and 53 minutes, and the duration of the day is 12 hours and 7 minutes.
Mujahid indicated that the sun apparently moves in the sky towards the south immediately after the autumnal equinox, as the night lengthens and the day shortens, and the sun sets from the North Pole, and darkness prevails for six continuous months, and the sun appears at the South Pole, and the day continues for 6 continuous months as well.
He pointed out that the sun becomes completely vertical over the Tropic of Cancer on December 22, the day of the winter solstice, when the night is the longest during the year, and the day is the shortest possible, and the fortieth winter begins, which is the coldest day of the whole year.
He noted that the sky will witness the phenomenon of the harvest moon, on Monday, September 20, as it is the closest full moon to the phenomenon of the autumnal equinox. (Petra)
