Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced the opening of the largest American-style prison complex in his country within days.
This came in a telephone interview with the “Ninth” program, presented by the journalist Youssef Al-Husseini, on Wednesday evening, on the official TV in Egypt.
“In a few days, we will open the largest prison complex, designed according to an American version, and it will be one of 7 or 8 prisons in Egypt,” Sisi said.
He added, “There will be no deportation cars (to transport prisoners), but a very respectable movement, a decent living, and very respectable medical, humanitarian, cultural and reform care.”
He continued: “Even if a citizen has sinned, we cannot punish him twice. We will punish him once with the availability of human life and subsistence.”
He added, “There is no key to reform, but it is done through an integrated system.”
Last April, the Arab Network for Human Rights Information (non-governmental, Cairo-based) estimated the number of main prisons in Egypt at 78, including 35 that were established after the January 2011 revolution.
Cairo usually faces local and international criticism regarding the conditions of prisoners, especially in high-security prisons, but it says that it respects the rights of prisoners and abides by the law, the constitution, and international covenants in this regard.
