One study revealed a hidden side effect of vitamin D in people who used to go to the bathroom a lot as a result of suffering from an overactive bladder.

And four Israeli researchers specializing in public health, obstetrics and gynecology conducted a review of previous studies, all conducted last August, in order to find in their study, published on PubMed, the causes that lead to overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, pelvic floor disorders, and urinary tract symptoms. inferiority.

The study stated that it was based on the hypothesis of the presence of vitamin D receptors in skeletal and smooth muscle cells throughout the body, specifically in the detrusor bladder muscle, and that the aim was to determine whether supplementation of this vitamin plays a role in treating symptoms of incontinence.

6 out of 7 studies conducted by Israeli researchers concluded that severe enuresis is significantly associated with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency within the body.

They also found that two trials revealed that vitamin D could be effective in treating incontinence.

Overall, the Israeli researchers concluded that two-thirds of the studies they reviewed again showed a link between adequate vitamin D intake and proper but not excessive urination.

How can vitamin D affect the bladder?

The researchers explained that the muscle of the detrusor bladder, which contracts to allow urine to leave the bladder, contains vitamin D receptors in the first place, and this vitamin may specifically help strengthen some muscles in and around the pelvic floor, including the bladder, which prevents going to the bathroom properly. Exaggerated.

Also, a 2019 study found that low levels of vitamin D in the body were actually associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.

It is noteworthy that the American Urological Association reported that 33 million Americans suffer from an overactive bladder.
