Typhoon Chantoo drenched Taiwan with torrential rain on Sunday, with the storm center passing over the island’s east coast, heading towards Shanghai.

On the Chinese mainland, the government issued a typhoon warning for Shanghai and warned of the possibility of heavy rain.

Flights and train services were suspended in Taiwan on Saturday as the storm approached, and more than 2,000 people were evacuated from flood-prone areas in Hualien County on the east coast, the Central News Agency reported.

At noon on Sunday local time, the center of Chantou was about 70 kilometers off the northeastern coast of Taiwan with winds of 162 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 198 kilometers per hour, according to the Central Meteorological Bureau.

The office said that up to 13 centimeters of rain fell on Sunday in some areas, with a rainfall of up to 2 centimeters.

Heavy rain fell on the capital, Taipei, and other parts of the island.

Chantou is expected to head north and flood Shanghai before heading east toward South Korea and Japan, according to the Meteorological Bureau.

In the same context, official media reported that Ningbo Airport, south of Shanghai, canceled 41 flights.
