A working paper prepared by researcher Sangeetha Jyoti, at the SIGCOMM 2021 Data Communications Conference, predicted that a smelly storm would hit the Earth and could cut off the internet and electricity for several months.

The researcher, who works at the University of California, Irvine, believed that the storm could actually be a super solar storm, affecting electricity and the Internet.

What are solar storms?

Solar storms are huge explosions of plasma and charged particles that explode into space from the Sun. These eruptions, which consist of flares, bulges, sunspots and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), can overwhelm Earth’s atmosphere if they occur in large quantities.

While Earth’s atmosphere can usually act as a defense against harmful radiation, if it is overshadowed by a solar storm, the result could be devastating.

Harmful solar storm particles can produce their own magnetic fields, which can modify the Earth’s magnetic field and affect compass readings. It can also cause particles to be discharged into Earth’s atmosphere and can also produce massive electrical surges in power grids and stimulate electricity in lines.

What does the new research say?

The research paper, “Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Online Apocalypse,” states a 1.6 to 12 percent chance of a solar storm of sufficient strength to cause catastrophic disruption within the next decade.

Aside from causing significant damage to the internet infrastructure on the planet, the storm could also affect power grids around the world.

It can also cause serious damage to repeaters, which are used to boost signals in long-distance fiber-optic cables, and the massive undersea cables that provide Internet connectivity between continents.

Has the Earth ever experienced a solar storm?

Very little data is currently available on solar storms. Only three major storms have been recorded so far, the last of which was in 2014. Earth has been relatively spared from such storms.

The deadliest solar storm, known as the “Carrington event”, was recorded in 1859. The storm caused compasses to fall globally.
