Recently, the Court of Cassation upheld a ruling issued by the Criminal Court in March, which sentenced a man to 8 years in prison after being convicted of attempting to kill a man in Amman in June 2020.

The Criminal Court charged the accused with stabbing the victim once in the chest during a heated argument in the Abdali area, and sentenced him to 12 years in prison.

The court decided to reduce the sentence to 8 years because the victim dropped the charges against the accused.

The court papers said that the accused was exiting a toilet on Abdali Street when he began exchanging words with the victim, and then “developed into a quarrel and the defendant grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim once in the chest.”

Court papers added that the victim survived the assault after undergoing chest surgery at a nearby hospital.

The doctors treating the hospital admitted that the injuries were life-threatening and he survived due to medical intervention.

The defendant appealed the criminal court’s ruling, arguing that “the prosecution failed to provide strong evidence to convict him of the charges against him.”

“The defendant was actually protecting himself and attacked the victim in self-defence,” the lawyer said.

For his part, the Public Prosecutor of the Criminal Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the ruling, and the latter ruled that the procedures of the Criminal Court were accurate and that the accused had been sentenced to the appropriate punishment.
