There are different ways to bathe, each with unique health benefits. Research is increasingly pointing to the benefits of cold showers, but most people choose to shower with hot water.

The steam from a hot bath offers many health benefits such as improving blood circulation and relieving stress. However there are hidden health risks.

“Steam from a shower can make you feel dizzy,” explained Abbas Kinani, a pharmacist at Chemist Click.

He explained that this is because “the body’s response to the rise in body temperature is to move blood to the surface of the skin to cool before returning it to the heart.” Feeling dizzy may be a sure sign that steam is lowering your blood pressure.

Dr. Al-Kinani explained how steam can lower blood pressure. “During this process, the arteries widen, becoming larger than normal, which leads to lower blood pressure,” he said.

In addition to dizziness, nausea can also indicate low blood pressure. While it may seem harmless, long-term low blood pressure can have serious consequences.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Severe drops in blood pressure can deprive your body of enough oxygen to function, resulting in heart and brain damage.”

The perfect way to take a shower

There is mounting evidence to support the need to withstand cold showers. Research published in the journal PLoS One shows that immersion in cold water can help prevent certain diseases.
