He was born in 1929, in the “Baramulla” region, which is currently located within the Indian territory.
During his political career, he defended the idea of ​​giving the people of Kashmir the right to self-determination through a referendum, and he fought for this idea.
He has been under house arrest by the Indian government, since 2010.
He left behind many books, which numbered 30 books.

The Kashmiri leader, Mr. Ali Gilani, closed his eyes to the world, on Wednesday (September 1), after he sacrificed 91 years of his life for the cause of Kashmir.

During his political career, Gilani defended the idea of ​​giving the people of Kashmir the right to self-determination through a referendum, and fought for his idea.

In pursuit of his goal, the Kashmiri leader practiced politics within the ranks of various political parties throughout his life, which made him a “main figure” for the two sides of Kashmir (Indian and Pakistani).

In honor of him for his struggle and struggle for the Kashmir cause, Islamabad gave Gilani the “Al-Imtiaz” medal (Pakistan’s highest civilian honor), coinciding with the commemoration of the 73rd anniversary of independence.

** Jammu and Kashmir

The name “Jammu and Kashmir” is given to the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, and it includes groups that have been fighting since 1989, against what it considers an “Indian occupation” of its regions.

And the region’s residents have been demanding independence from India and joining Pakistan since the two countries gained independence from Britain in 1947, and Islamabad and New Delhi had a Muslim-majority region.

On August 5, 2019, the Indian government abolished Article 370 of the constitution, which guarantees self-government in Jammu and Kashmir, which has the only Muslim majority in the country, and then divides it into two regions administered by the federal government.

** Birth and Origin

Gilani was born on September 29, 1929 in the “Baramulla” region, which is located today within the Indian territory, and received his primary and secondary education in an area close to his hometown, until he graduated from Oriental College, located today within the borders of the Pakistani region of Lahore.

In the 1940s until the 1980s, Gilani worked in the journalistic field in addition to practicing the profession of teaching in a government school.

** Political life

By 1952, Gilani entered the world of politics by belonging to the Jamaat-e-Islami in Kashmir, and began volunteering in its activities in 1959 after his resignation from education, where he held various positions in it, including the General Secretariat.

Gilani experienced imprisonment for the first time in August 1962, when he was sentenced to 13 months, later reaching the total years he spent in prison, more than 12 years.

During the period from 1972 to 1987, Gilani was elected as a representative of Sopur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

In 1972, after being banned from speaking Urdu (the official language of Kashmir) in the first session of parliament, Gilani left the parliament building.

** Islamic management

The Kashmiri leader played a major role in launching the armed resistance against the Indian administration, which began after Gilani was imprisoned with 3 other parliamentarians, and news spread about violations in the 1987 elections.

Gilani has boycotted the elections since he resigned from his position in the judiciary in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989.

The year 1992 witnessed the convening of the “All India Freedom Conference”, in which nearly 30 political parties participated, including the Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir, which was represented by Gilani at the conference.

Later, in 2003, the conference resulted in the birth of a new chapter called “All India Freedom Congress-G” which Gilani headed until his resignation last June.

In August 2004, Gilani founded the Jammu Kashmir Freedom Movement, which later became one of the most prominent political forces in the region.

The movement aimed to establish an Islamic administration in the region, also stressing the need to resolve the Kashmir crisis in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

** his death

Gilani, who was constantly suffering from health problems, was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.

Gilani has been under house arrest by the Indian government since 2010, and he only leaves his home to hospital for treatment.

The Kashmiri leader left behind many of his 30 books.
