The Court of Cassation upheld a ruling issued by the High Criminal Court in April to imprison a man for 12 years after being convicted of killing his brother in Rusaifa in Zarqa Governorate.

The court declared the accused guilty of running over his brother with a car on October 17, 2019 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to 12 years because the victim’s parents decided to drop the charges against their son.

Court documents said the victim was a “consistently troublemaker” and that on the day of the incident he had a “heated argument” with his father while they were all standing in the street.

Then the victim threw a mobile phone at his father, and the two got involved in a small fight, and the accused thought that the victim pushed his father to the ground, so he jumped in his car and headed towards his brother.

The court confirmed that the defendant hit the victim with the car and threw him more than 30 meters away and he fell to the ground. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. The defendant appealed the court ruling through his lawyer, arguing that he “mistakenly hit his brother while driving and that he did not intend to kill him,” according to court documents.
