Experts warn that the early appearance of gray hair can be associated with disorders in the work of one of the organs; like the thyroid gland.

It is true that hair turns gray mainly because of the genes we inherit from our parents and with age, however, the return of the condition can be explained not only by these reasons.

Pharmacist, Parvinder Sago (Primary Medical Consultant and Physician at Simply Meds), discusses when early gray hair can be a serious cause for concern due to the health problems associated with it.

The pharmacist noted that according to Harvard Health, hair goes through a natural cycle of death and regeneration in many people, hair gradually turns gray, starting at the age of 35 years.

However, Sago added, while graying does not always have a benign cause, it could be a sign of thyroid disease.

According to the expert, graying, which indicates a weak thyroid gland, means that it produces too much or, conversely, a small amount of hormones, and this imbalance, in turn, provokes a number of symptoms, including fluctuations in weight, psycho-emotional state.

According to Sago, in the event of premature graying of hair, it is not necessary to check the condition of the thyroid gland with a doctor, but this will help in diagnosing the problem in time.

The pharmacist added that another “serious cause” of premature graying is a lack of B vitamins.

To reverse the process, you need to provide yourself with adequate food sources of B vitamins in your diet, says the expert.

Other reasons for graying

Sometimes, gray hair can indicate vitiligo, which is caused by a lack of the pigment melanin.

Vitiligo can be accompanied by white patches on the skin and hair, and it can also mean that the hair becomes completely white or gray.

Additionally, gray hair can be a sign of an autoimmune disease; Such as alopecia areata that occurs under the influence of genetic factors, lifestyle factors and skin diseases.

There are also rare genetic diseases associated with gray hair; Among them are neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis.
