Former US President Donald Trump described the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan as the “greatest foreign policy humiliation” the United States has faced in its history.

Trump, a Republican, has repeatedly blamed Democrat Biden for the fall of Afghanistan to the hardline Islamist Taliban movement, even though the US withdrawal that caused the collapse was negotiated before his administration took office.

“Biden’s failed withdrawal from Afghanistan is the most astonishing display of gross incompetence by a president, perhaps ever,” Trump told a rally of his supporters near Coleman, Alabama.

Taliban leaders are trying to form a new government after their forces swept across Afghanistan with the withdrawal of US-led forces after 20 years after the collapse of the government and army backed by the West.

For his part, Biden criticized the Afghan army for refusing to fight and condemned the now ousted Afghan government and announced that he had inherited from Trump a bad withdrawal agreement.

In his speech to the crowd, Trump blamed Biden for the situation for not following the plan his administration came up with, and lamented the American personnel and equipment that were left behind with the troop withdrawal. “This is not a withdrawal,” he said. This is a complete surrender.

Trump added that the Taliban, with whom he negotiated, respect him. He pointed out that the quick takeover of Afghanistan would not have happened if he was still in the presidency.

“We could have walked away with dignity,” Trump said. We should have come out with dignity and instead we came out with the complete opposite of dignity.”
