The Court of Cassation upheld a State Security Court ruling that sentenced a drug dealer to six years in prison after being convicted of possessing and distributing illegal narcotic substances in Naour.
The court declared the accused guilty of possession of various quantities of drugs in Naour on August 11, with the intent of selling drugs in the local market and sentenced him to the maximum penalty. The State Security Court also ordered him to pay a fine of 4,000 dinars.
Court documents said the DEA learned the defendant was in possession of drugs and dispatched one of its agents to pretend to be a buyer on August 16.
The court documents added that the security man called the accused and bought some drugs for 10 dinars.
A few days later, the Drug Enforcement Administration learned that the accused “was selling drugs in his neighborhood and they arrested him on the spot,” according to court papers.
Anti-drug agents found a variety of drugs hidden in his car, court documents added.
The defendant challenged the ruling of the State Security Court through his lawyer, who said that the court “did not provide strong evidence to implicate his client.”
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution Office of the State Security Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the sentence and the fine imposed on the accused.
The Court of Cassation confirmed that the State Security Court had followed the correct procedures in handing down the verdict against the defendant.
“It was clear to the court that the defendant voluntarily admitted possession of illegal drugs,” she said.
