Heavy rains fell on the island of Greenland in an unprecedented way in history, which led to the melting of part of the ice sheet on the island, which is known as the “green land”, an event that could have serious repercussions on coastal cities.
And the American newspaper “USA Today” said that the rain fell heavily during several hours during one day, in a precedent that is the first of its kind in the history of the island, which has never experienced such rain before.
And temperatures on the island rose above freezing, in an extremely rare climatic phenomenon.
Greenland is the largest island in the world with an area of 2 million square kilometres, and is self-governing within the framework of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The rainfall occurred at the highest point of the island’s ice cap, according to the National Snow and Ice Center.
In addition to the record rainfall, temperatures were above freezing for 9 hours, the fourth time in history, and the third since 2012.
The National Center said that the cause of the high temperatures is caused by the rush of warm air and humidity across the country.
The rain mixed with warm air resulted in 7 billion tons of water falling on the ice sheet, resulting in the loss of this layer seven times more than the average loss in mid-August.
The area of the ice sheet in Grayland is more than one million square kilometers, and with the climate change hitting the earth, a number of glaciers have melted on the huge island.
And if the ice cover melts, it will turn into water that flows into the oceans, and this practically means that the sea level will rise globally, by about 7 metres, exposing more coastal cities to danger.
