The Court of Cassation upheld a ruling issued by the South Amman Court last November, serving a three-year prison sentence for a man convicted of car theft in Amman in December 2019.
The South Amman Court charged the defendant with stealing a car on December 15 and smashing one of its windows, and sentenced him to the maximum penalty.
Court papers said that the defendant managed to break into a car that was parked on the street and ran away, and when its owner heard the siren, he went down to inspect his car to discover that it was stolen and reported the incident to the police.
The court added that a few hours later, the police patrol noticed a man driving a vehicle without license plates, and when they stopped him, it turned out that it was stolen.
The court papers said that the accused was arrested and the owner of the car was summoned to the police station, where he confirmed that the car belonged to him.
The defendant appealed the ruling of the South Amman Court, arguing that “the prosecution failed to provide strong evidence to convict him of the charges against him.” The defense lawyer also accused the court of relying on contradictory witness statements.
Meanwhile, the Public Prosecutor of the South Amman Court requested the Court of Cassation to uphold the verdict, and the latter ruled that the procedures of the South Amman Court were accurate and that the accused was sentenced to the appropriate punishment.
