Representatives from the Democratic Party in the US Congress called on the administration of President Joe Biden to pressure the Israeli entity to end its siege on the Gaza Strip, open the crossings permanently, and ensure the entry of aid. Fifty-three deputies signed a petition denouncing the “collective punishment imposed by Israel on the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, including the ban on essential essential items.”
In their petition, the representatives affirmed that “the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza is intolerable, and that ensuring that Palestinians in Gaza receive humanitarian aid is vital to securing the well-being of the 2.1 million residents.”
The petition, initiated by Democratic Congressmen Mark Buchan and Debbie Dingell, three months after the latest Israeli aggression, called for “vital changes to be made to deal with the humanitarian situation and the crisis in Gaza.”
“Unfortunately, the recent Israeli air campaign in Gaza has worsened living conditions, causing $380 million in damage to the besieged strip, and requiring $485 million in humanitarian and immediate reconstruction assistance,” the letter states, citing a recent United Nations report. “.
She added: “With Israel’s tight control over Gaza, the occupying power has the ultimate say in what goes in and out of the besieged strip, and is often accused of depriving the population of basic items, including basic foods, to punish the Palestinians.”
The deputies also denounced the Israeli entity’s restriction of the fishing zone in Gaza to six nautical miles, as a form of collective punishment. The letter is one of several sent to officials in the Biden administration in recent months highlighting Israel’s aggression against the Palestinians. Last June, 73 US lawmakers urged Biden to reverse his predecessor’s pro-Israel policies.
In May, 25 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives sent a letter to US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, asking him to pressure the occupation to stop the forced eviction (displacement) of Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem.
Egypt mediated on May 21 last; With a ceasefire agreement to end a round of violent military escalation between the Palestinian resistance and the occupation, which lasted 11 days. The residents of Gaza, who are more than two million Palestinians, have been suffering from deteriorating living conditions, as a result of the continuous Israeli blockade of the Strip, since 2006.
