The giant container ship Ever Given crossed the Suez Canal on Friday, for the first time since it left Egypt after it ran aground in the canal, which disrupted navigation in the waterway for six days in March.

The Suez Canal Authority said in a statement that the ship crossed the canal on its way from the United Kingdom to China, as part of a convoy of 26 ships that sailed from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. Another 36 ships crossed the canal from the south.

The authority said that a group of senior guides from the canal and two locomotives escorted Ever Given during the crossing.

The ship, one of the world’s largest container ships, got stuck in the Suez Canal in high winds on March 23, halting shipping in both directions and disrupting global trade.

Ever Given, who is 400 meters tall, left Egypt on July 7.

The ship was released after lengthy negotiations and a settlement, the details of which were not disclosed, between the Suez Canal Authority, the owners of Ever Given and the insurance companies. It arrived in the Dutch port of Rotterdam on July 29 before heading to England.

About 15% of global shipping traffic passes through the Suez Canal, the shortest shipping lane between Europe and Asia.

Friday’s voyage is the 22nd for the Ever Given waterway.

Data for the websites MarineTraffic.com and Veselfinder.com, which are concerned with following up navigation, showed the ship in the Red Sea after crossing the canal.
