A few days ago, Twitter released some design changes aimed at making the platform more accessible. However, users complained of eye strain and headaches, which made Twitter retract the changes.
And the platform said in a tweet, that it is reconsidering the changes “We are making changes to all the buttons to make them easier to see, and because you told us the new look is uncomfortable for people with sensory sensitivities. We are listening.”
The platform also announced that it had “identified issues with the ‘Chirp’ font for Windows users” and said it was “actively working to fix it.”
Twitter users took this opportunity to share how accessibility is different for everyone. One user wrote, “Accessibility is not a one-size-fits-all. These new features have made Twitter unavailable to people with astigmatism, dyslexia (new font), color contrast and photosensitive migraines (new color scheme). Changes should be an option, not an obligation.”
“I have something called conical atrophy which means I have 20/25 vision, so this little filiform line just jumps back and forth and I can only deal with it for 30 minutes,” added Kristen Schachinger, a Twitter user.
Others were relieved that they weren’t the only ones experiencing difficulty, with one user saying “Oh my God! Thanks! I knew I was having a hard time with the changes but couldn’t figure out why.”
All in all, we have to commend Twitter for the quick response to this. It is good to see the platform care about the experience of its users, and we look forward to seeing the new accessible designs that the platform will launch.
