A New York City woman has won the first title in a special category launched by the Guinness Book of Records, for the fastest attempt to run on a treadmill for a distance of 100 miles, equivalent to 161 metres.
Amy Palmero, whose left leg was amputated below the knee after a motorcycle accident in 1994, completed the 100-mile treadmill in 21 hours, 43 minutes and 29 seconds.
According to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”, Amy – who uses a prosthetic limb – managed to overcome the goal set by the Guinness Book of Records, as the encyclopedia set the requirement to cut the distance in less than 22 hours, to launch a world record category for running on the female automatic device. For those who live on one leg.
The new record holder told the Guinness website: “In my childhood, I had many options, including working in a fire brigade, in the police or army service, and becoming an Olympic champion, and also to achieve a Guinness record.”
She added: “After the accident, many options were lost, but the strongest part of the human body remained, which is my mind, and it is the one who led me today to the Guinness Book of World Records.”
Amy indicated that she used a number of prosthetic limbs when executing the record attempt to ensure her comfort while running, while one of the judges of the International Encyclopedia was present to hand the ambitious lady the record certificate after the successful attempt.
