The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Hala Zawati, said today, Thursday, that the King affirmed that Jordan will work with partners and friends to help Lebanon.

In response to a question about the possibility of supplying Lebanon with electricity from Jordan and Egyptian gas through Jordan and Syria to Lebanon, Minister Zawati said that helping Lebanon and the brotherly Lebanese people was at the forefront of the topics raised by the King during his recent visit to the United States and his ongoing international and regional discussions and contacts.

She affirmed Jordan’s readiness to provide all possible support to Lebanon and to provide it with electric power from the Jordanian network and to deliver Egyptian gas through Jordan and Syria to the brothers in Lebanon.

She said that these issues were discussed extensively with the brothers in Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, with the United States and with our partners in the international community in the recent period. She stressed that the search is continuing on ways to achieve this, “and we will do everything we can to help our brothers.”

On Thursday, the Lebanese presidency announced US assistance to provide electricity in Lebanon through a plan that includes Jordan, Egypt, the World Bank and Syria.

And the presidency’s account via Twitter said, “President Aoun received a phone call from the US Ambassador to Lebanon, Dorothy Shea, who informed him of the US administration’s decision to help Lebanon extract electrical energy from Jordan through Syria through Egyptian gas.”

The presidency quoted Shea as saying, “The transfer of Egyptian gas through Jordan and Syria to northern Lebanon will be facilitated.”

Shea added that “negotiations are underway with the World Bank to secure financing for the price of Egyptian gas, repair and strengthening electricity transmission lines, and the required maintenance of gas pipelines.”
