The Libyan government announced the release of one of its officials after he was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the capital, Tripoli, early this month.

The government said in a statement, “The Deputy Prime Minister, Hussein Al-Qatrani, received in the city of Benghazi, Reda Al-Fraites, the head of the government’s office, who was kidnapped during the past two weeks in Tripoli.”

An official source in the Libyan Interior Ministry confirmed the release of Al-Freitais and his arrival in Benghazi.

The source from Tripoli said that “the head of the government office in Benghazi and the director of the office of the deputy prime minister, Reda Al-Freites, was released late last night, and he is in good health and has not been harmed.”

The government did not announce who was responsible for the kidnapping, and the source refused to provide any details about the release process and its circumstances.

At the beginning of this month, unknown gunmen kidnapped the director of the Deputy Prime Minister’s office from his place of residence in Tripoli, without knowing their motives or their demands. What happened sparked widespread international condemnation.

The United Nations called on the Libyan government to make intensive efforts to release the official and ensure his safety.
